HIV 5 The epidemiological triangle for HIV is composed of three pillars namely, the agent, treatment, and health therapy. The establishment of a triad of a disease is essential for epidemiologists as they need to understand and determine the spread of diseases.

This concept arose more than 60 years ago when George McNew, a plant pathologist at the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research, diagrammed the fact that an epidemic arises from the interaction of three factors – a susceptible host, a virulent pathogen and a hospitable environment. This model of investigation is called the epidemiological triangle because the epidemiologist must analyze the following three elements: agent, host, and environment . The development of disease is dependent on the extent of the host’s exposure to an agent, the strength or virulence of the agent, and the host’s genetic or immunological susceptibility. The epidemiological triad (hosts, agent/vectors and environments) has served us well in dealing with epidemics in the past, and may be worth re-evaluating to this end.

The triad consists of an external agent, a susceptible host, and an environment that brings the host and agent together. The Epidemiologic Triangle is a model that scientists have developed for studying health problems, specifically to understand infectious diseases and how they spread.
